For my fellow UK and US readers : Norman Palm is great music from Berlin, probably the best release from the city this year (congrats to City Slang)
I liked his “songs” record and was touched by his girls & boys EP so I was a little worried that his new record when I was reading that he moved to “pop”.
But I instantly fall in love with record, in my top 5 for this year already and the most listened in the past weeks
Does anyone agree that new Coral sounds like Teenage Fanclub ?
This is finally available also in Germany, almost 3 weeks later than the UK release. Not sure if the label had a special reason to release this later than the UK or if if this is a because they need to built press and radio (and ignoring the internet created demand)
Never mind this is a different record. Been following the band from the start (+ actually had the pleasure to work with them on previous records) I am happy that they still exist as a band. Just giving the record a first listen and actually they sound like Teenage Fanclub, of course more guitars but great harmonies.
The band biggest hits album was released via Sony Music back in the years, actually on Columbia, at this time I had been a Product Manager at Sony, but working for the other label : Epic - we had the better English bands like Oasis, Suede, Manics, Primal Scream and we didn’t took anything for serious which was from the UK and worked by the folks from the other floor - in the end it was just “Tattva” and Crispian Mills sympathy for swastikas (not that great PR story)
14 years later the band is back with a great prog-rock concept album really different from what they have done in the previous decade. Maybe still not credible but I give a shit on credibility now if I like the music
I have missed this band so far, I was loving Elbow, Doves etc. but missed to I am Kloot. The new record is getting great reviews and is nominated for the Mercury Price. Listened to it 3 times now and it’s growing.
A classic example of the fading power of the music industry. Now you can listen to it on Spotify and do not need to get it from a torrent. The story is of course more complex. Nevermind the music is great.
The Country Album from the Snow Patrol Singer (with members or REM and Belle & Sebastian)
Wow, it’s been a while… and yes I was busy doing other stuff but also I felt that there was not that much good music out there
I have to admit I was a fan of Snow Patrol (before Stadium Rock) and I grew up with REM - so I was kind of curious how this would work if members of those bands do an album. Just giving it a first listen and thank god it is better than the current Snow Patrol. Have a try
Hard to find anything about the swedish Duo - actually there is a band called The Palpitations - which was Eric Claptons backing band on two shows in the 70s - : members including Pete Townshend, Steve Winwood and Ron Wood… and there is a trance compilation with the same title too….
But the new Palpitation is not classic rock but lovely smooth C86 flavored indie sound.
Midlake featuring the former singer from The Czars : John Grant - King of Denmark
Last year I finally found my love for the music of Midlake - great tunes to listen on your Ipod in the middle of the night to calm down and finally fall asleep (it works).
In between the recording of their newest album the band was working with a guy called John Grant who have been the lead singer of The Czars (and actually spend 9 years in Germany as a language student). Their collaboration is called ” Queen of Denmark” and is a great album not only for those who like Midlake
