Norman Palm - pop goes the world
For my fellow UK and US readers : Norman Palm is great music from Berlin, probably the best release from the city this year (congrats to City Slang)
I liked his “songs” record and was touched by his girls & boys EP so I was a little worried that his new record when I was reading that he moved to “pop”.
But I instantly fall in love with record, in my top 5 for...
Does anyone agree that new Coral sounds like...
This is finally available also in Germany, almost 3 weeks later than the UK release. Not sure if the label had a special reason to release this later than the UK or if if this is a because they need to built press and radio (and ignoring the internet created demand)
Never mind this is a different record. Been following the band from the start (+ actually had the pleasure to work with them on...
I never was a Kula Shaker guy
The band biggest hits album was released via Sony Music back in the years, actually on Columbia, at this time I had been a Product Manager at Sony, but working for the other label : Epic - we had the better English bands like Oasis, Suede, Manics, Primal Scream and we didn’t took anything for serious which was from the UK and worked by the folks from the other floor - in the end it...
New I am Kloot ?! yes really good
I have missed this band so far, I was loving Elbow, Doves etc. but missed to I am Kloot. The new record is getting great reviews and is nominated for the Mercury Price. Listened to it 3 times now and it’s growing.
I Am Kloot – Sky At Night
Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse made it to Spotify
A classic example of the fading power of the music industry. Now you can listen to it on Spotify and do not need to get it from a torrent. The story is of course more complex. Nevermind the music is great.
Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse – Dark Night of The Soul
The Country Album from the Snow Patrol Singer...
Wow, it’s been a while… and yes I was busy doing other stuff but also I felt that there was not that much good music out there
I have to admit I was a fan of Snow Patrol (before Stadium Rock) and I grew up with REM - so I was kind of curious how this would work if members of those bands do an album. Just giving it a first listen and thank god it is better than the current Snow...

C86 flavored Swedish pop : Palpitation
Hard to find anything about the swedish Duo - actually there is a band called The Palpitations - which was Eric Claptons backing band on two shows in the 70s - : members including Pete Townshend, Steve Winwood and Ron Wood… and there is a trance compilation with the same title too….
But the new Palpitation is not classic rock but lovely smooth C86 flavored indie sound.

M83 founding member with new project : Team Ghost
M83 was one of the hidden gems when I browsed other peoples Spotify playlist using the new social features (thanks DD)
If you want more try Team Ghost
Nicolas Fromageau founding member and co-writer of the fist M83 albums is working within a new project called Team Ghost.
Team Ghost – You Never Did Anything Wrong To Me EP
Midlake featuring the former singer from The Czars...
Last year I finally found my love for the music of Midlake - great tunes to listen on your Ipod in the middle of the night to calm down and finally fall asleep (it works).
In between the recording of their newest album the band was working with a guy called John Grant who have been the lead singer of The Czars (and actually spend 9 years in Germany as a language student). Their collaboration is...
Roky Erickson with Okkervil River: True Love Cast...
I own a decent collection of Roky Erickson records and was amazed that he has recorded the follow up to his 1994 solo record. Even more surprising is his “backing band” Okkervil River. Haven’t spend much time with the record yet but you should give the album a listen (and pay tribute)
Roky Erickson – True Love Cast Out All Evil
Note : there is tons of live stuff on...
Lovely music from Iceland - the work of Sindri Mar...
I found out about Sindri and his music via a review on the new Seabear record. The album called “We built a fire” is by far the most listened record during the last three months. Some songs sound like Arcade Fire but the most obvious comparison for me would be Dean Wareham of Galaxy 500 with his later project Luna.
The new Seabear record is a good start to dive into the world of...
Do you like Mumford and Sons ? Please try...
I was confused about the German language album title - actually a little bit afraid about that band being representing German Schlager or 70’s folk a la Hannes Wader, but what a nice surprise it’s folky indie rock from Canada.
So if you like Mumford and Sons -pleas have a listen
Woodpigeon – Die Stadt Muzikanten
The band is currently in tour in Europe , hitting Berlin on...
New releases from well known bands : Nada Surf,...
Of course there were a lot of new album from our beloved bands. In case you have missed it here are the Spotify links
Nada Surf – If I Had A Hi-Fi (covers record)
The National – High Violet
Hole – Nobody’s Daughter (actually a really good record)
Broken Social Scene – Forgiveness Rock Record
plus great German singer / songwriter pop:
Gisbert Zu Knyphausen – Hurra Hurra So Nicht
Phantogram - Eyelid Movies
Phantogram – Eyelid Movies
This is actually released in October 2009, but I found out about this just 3 weeks ago and “star-ed” two songs of the band out of a long playlist, happy to find out that the album is great two.
That’s what Wikipedia says about them
Phantogram’s unique dance-friendly sound has helped them play as opening acts for more established bands...

a couple of sad albums this week with the new one of corrine bailey rae who recently lost her husband to drugs, motion picture soundscapes from nick cave & warren ellis, lonely piano pieces from nils frahm, the beautiful new slow-motion-album by savoy grand and a soft indie-electro playlist from myself entitled “melting the ice” - light your fireplace, pour yourself a glass of good...

Cold War Kids – Behave Yourself
After the more “neutral” 2008 album (I forgot about it) the band is back with an EP and with a great lead track Cold War Kids – Audience Of One. This song actually made us smile in days without sun in Berlin....

mr. tom's latest recommendation
Blue Roses – Blue Roses
Outstanding album. Somewhere between Devendra Banhart and something sweet you eat sometimes… the cover reflects the music at its best. In german you may call this sound a little bit “verwunschen” and you may think about “Amélie Poulain”… No hints, enjoy yourself.
The non-album track “Moments before sleep” (B-track from...
